With the right treatment and lifestyle changes, patients diagnosed with diabetes can continue to enjoy all of their favorite activities and get their health back on track.

Are you worried that you might have diabetes? First, have a look at some of the symptoms we’ve listed below. If any of the symptoms match what you’ve been experiencing, be sure to call us right away for an appointment, especially if the symptoms have come on suddenly.

Signs You Should Be Checked for Diabetes

  • Fatigue and Hunger: When you eat, your body converts the food into a type of sugar called glucose, which your cells use for energy. Insulin is used to bring the glucose into the cells that need it. But if your body isn’t producing enough insulin, then your cells can’t absorb the glucose, leaving you to feel tired and hungry.
  • Thirst and Increased Urination: On average, people urinate 4-7 times every day. However, if your body can’t absorb glucose, your kidneys may attempt to flush it out of your system through the bladder. This takes increased fluids, making you thirsty, and when you drink more, you need to urinate more.
  • Dry, Itchy Skin & Mouth: Fluids used to urinate can’t be used for other things. You might notice that your skin becomes dry and itchy while your mouth also feels dry.
  • Blurred Vision: Sudden changes in vision can be due to fluid changes in your body. The lenses in your eyes might swell, changing their shape and making it harder for you to focus.
  • Yeast Infections: Both men and women who have high glucose levels are more susceptible to yeast infections. These infections can show up between your fingers and toes, under the breasts, or around the genitalia.
  • Slow-Healing Cuts and Sores: High blood sugar can cause nerve damage, which means that cuts and sores take that much longer to heal.
  • Numbness and Pain in Legs & Feet: This, too, can result from nerve damage.

If you are over 45 and you are experiencing these symptoms, especially if you have other risk factors for diabetes, it’s best to give us a call and make an appointment for a test with our diabetes doctor. We proudly serve patients in the areas surrounding Fayetteville, Spring Lake, Raeford,
